This is a weekly report on activities we’ve been taking part in during the week. It’ll generally revolve around some aspect of Japanese Culture, but usually not stray from it. These are also usually quick thoughts, so we hope you enjoy our quick take on a few of things we’ve been up to so far. You can feel free to share what you all have been up to as well.
If you ever felt a sudden case of depression, watch a good dose of Smile Precure. It’s what I do when I feel sick; exhausted from college; or a sudden onslaught of nightmarish memories from Muv-Luv Alternative. I’m surprised no one in the team is blogging about it; it’s a pretty crazy work. I mean, there is no stranger monster than a Math problem textbook monster. Consider that a great reason to watch the show; it’s a wonderful mahou shoujo show and it makes the blues go away.
That said, I am pissed I didn’t get the tickets for the Madoka Magica double feature on October 20. October 16 is my birthday — hooray, I’m an old and cranky 19 year older — and I naively thought that will be a great birthday present for myself. Instead, no one in Chicago I know of got it. How frustrating.
Maybe I shouldn’t be this annoyed. I now have different thoughts on Madoka Magica. While I used to share the same thoughts with Justin on the show, I now think it’s frankly overrated. The new me is after all a pretentious visual novel reader who settles for nothing less than a VN with a mention of Schrödinger’s cat box; my standards are up there.
Hey man, eroges have plot. Good plot.
Anyway, Madoka Magica‘s strengths are its shock value and its critiques on the mahou shoujo genre. Urobuchi is a one-trick pony and he is trying to use his success from Saya no Uta to shock us once more; however, shock horror gets old. The reason most people were excited about Madoka Magica is how “different” this is — I know this is because I was one of them. If you watch it again, you’ll find flaws. Let’s not even talk about the strange End of Evangelion-ish ending. If Madoka is supposed to be deconstructing the concept of a magical girl, I think it’s reaffirming it as a heroic figure in the end.
Is being a magical girl that “dire”, as Justin said, in the post-Madoka world? I’m sure the setting is like any mahou shoujo shows without the urban backdrop and Kajiuran music. Any show can be dark if you forget to turn off the lights and put tomato juice in the characters’ faces. Darker isn’t necessarily better.
And episode 3 is a blatant ripoff from Muv-Luv Alternative. It could be me being a biased VN fan, but I thought MLA had more impact with ‘it’. And that’s only the beginning of your newly developed post-trauma stress disorder. Madoka Magica isn’t shocking; it just craves for attention.
All in all, I’m pissed I didn’t get a ticket and I ranted about said work. Gee, my birthday officially sucks now; I’m really going to be a cranky 19 year older, am I?
