GREAT GRAMMARS
Re:One Piece:
Wow, that’s pretty crazy! 4 million copies for such a late volume is a lot for such a long running series. I know it’s super popular in Japan, but man, I seriously can’t be bothered to collect something that exceeds 50 volumes. I don’t have the space of it (although I am seriously considering the 3-in-1 editions now that they are back in stock). ;___; So I’m surprised to see so many people aren’t bothered by its crazy length in Japan, especially since there is no end in sight and space is a luxury in Japan. It might even go past 100 volumes at this rate. :O
@soaring_wings
The crazy thing is that Shueisha keeps printing more and more copies after each volume…I mean, wow. That’s just crazy. But on the note of collecting volumes, some might actually donate their copies so they can have space. Although there are people who are nuts enough to have every single copy somewhere in their small room O.o
@soaring_wings
I’m actually one of those crazy people who aims to one day own all of One Piece (mainly because the individual volumes are cheaper than shoujo and I love re-reading One Piece). So far I have the first two of the 3-in-1 editions and volume 21. T__T I can practically hear the sad cries of my future wallet.
I plan to store them boxes labeled by arc if I run out of bookshelf space because I can’t see myself ever being able to donate any of the volumes I buy.
@AnimeEmily
I tend to keep what I buy as well, which is why I try not to buy anything that has a chance of exceeding 50 volumes. I have sold/got rid of manga I bought and didn’t like though. I guess boxes could do the trick, but I think my parents would start to think I have an unhealthy addiction to buying if I started buying stuff and packing it up in boxes. That said, I did get the 3-in-1 of Skip Beat not that long ago and I think it does a good job of condensing the volumes (via thin paper), so the 3-in-1 editions of One Piece are looking very tempting, especially since they reduce the volume count to 1/3 of it’s total so even at 100 volumes, I’d only have 30-ish if I bought them all in the 3-in-1 format. I just hope Viz continues doing the 3-in-1 editions. The fact that they are called East Blue arc, kind of worries me. I want to have 3-in-1s of all the volumes. ;__; (Not just for space, but for consistency too).
@soaring_wings
Hm, you do make a good point there with the box plan. Darn. Back to drawing board.
Oh! I saw that and regretted not buying it because I’ve been wanting to start on Skip Beat for the longest time. But, yeah, I love the way they figured out to condense the volumes. I suppose the only thing I would kind of miss when buying the 3-in-1 volumes versus the individual ones is seeing the full cover art, but I suppose I could live. I think if the volumes sell well, then Viz may consider doing the whole series. Though, I was reading through some forum comments and it seems they may been released just to reel in people who were interested in One Piece. That would seem likely since the last 3-in-1 volume finishing up the East Blue Arc was released 2 years ago with no news of continuing with the format since. Let’s hope Viz decides it’s a good idea to keep releasing One Piece omnibuses.
@soaring_wings
Yeah, that’s what I’m worried about as well. D: I guess I’ll just go ahead and get the 4 volumes they have released. They have been doing some for Naruto and InuYasha, I hear. So maybe, we’ll get some down the road once the sales of the single volumes slow down.
Yeah, agreed. I miss the pretty cover art of single releases. Plus the paper quality is better because it’s thicker, but for the price and the space saving, I think it’s something I can deal with as well, especially for super long series. (Speaking of which, Skip Beat seems like it’s going to be another super long series. I initially went with the 3-in-1 because the single volumes of 1-3 were out of print, but now I’m sort of glad I did).
